Behavioral disorders refers to a functional disorder or abnormality. It can also be said to be a category of mental disorders that are characterized by persistent.

An emotional and behavioral disorder is an emotional disability characterized by the following over a long period of time:

 (i) An inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers

and/or teachers. For preschool-age children, this would include other care providers.

 (ii) An inability to learn which cannot be adequately explained by intellectual, sensory or health factors.

 (iii) A consistent or chronic inappropriate type of behavior or feelings under normal conditions.

 (iv) A displayed pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression.

 (v) A displayed tendency to develop physical symptoms, pains or unreasonable fears associated with personal or school problems.





The three most common types of behavior disorders are as follow : attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and conduct disorder (CD).


Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)


ADHD is a condition that impairs an individual’s ability to properly focus and to control impulsive behaviors. Acording to reseach , about 7-20% of children are thought to have a form of ADHD. There are three subtypes of ADHD. Each subtype is characterized by its primary symptoms. The symptoms of and subtypes of ADHD are:

* ADHD predominantly inattentive type: difficulty paying attention for extended periods of time, trouble completing tasks, inability to focus on one thing, and turning in incomplete assignments

* ADHD predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type: trouble sitting still, fidgeting, saying whatever comes to mind without thinking, and shopping without thinking about your purchases or finances (impulsive buying)

* ADHD combined type: symptoms of both the inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive types

Conduct Disorder (CD)

More severe and criminal problem behaviors, such as burning down a school building, are associated with CD. CD is characterized by behaviors that violate the rights of others or major norms that are expected given the child's age. Symptoms of conduct disorder include:

* Aggression towards people and animals: physical violence, armed robbery, sexual assault, and animal torture

* Destruction of property: intentionally setting a fire and purposefully destroying others' possessions

* Deceitfulness or theft: shoplifting, forgery, stealing things from unoccupied cars, and conning people

* Serious rule violations: repeatedly breaking curfew, truancy before age 13, and running away at least twice

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)

ODD can be classify as a behavioral disorder that are aggressive, hostile, and irritable, but are not as severe as those related to CD? These type of behaviors are seen in children with ODD.

Symptoms of ODD include:

Being argumentative
Purposefully annoying people
Anger
Easily annoyed / Irritation
Unwilling to accept blame for mistakes made
Urge for revenge

5 ways to overcome Emotional and behavioral disorders

1. cognitive-behavioral therapy

Take part in one-to-one talk therapies. cognitive therapy and behavioral therapy seeks to free patients from the negative thought patterns that often weigh them down when they’re feeling low. Try to engage the patient in conversation when he or she is having a good day, morning or afternoon. Make sure the patient understands you care and are there for support.

2. Rewards

Rewarding positive behavior is ultimately one of the most iffective ways to treat emotional/behavioral disorder. When they receive positive feedback and rewards, they start to see that there is a positive benefit to good behavior. They will then start to see you as more of an ally than an adversary, and this will in turn motivate them to want to behave and do well .

3. Fair treatment 

People with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders often don’t respond very well to situations that appear unjust to them. This can successively trigger a negative emotions and acting-out behavior. Dont give preferencial treatment to some set or group or people, make sure every one are treated equally.

4. Mini-breaks

Dont rebuke kids with Emotional and behavioral disorders for their lapses in stead be nice to them and build in short rest periods or mini breaks in between the learning hours.

5. Motivation

Emotional and Behavioral Disorder students tend to have had a lot of bad experiences in school and the neighborhood. Therefore they often lack the desire or motivation to try to succeed. Motivating them in the little good things they do can totally get over behavioral disorder and turn a good live.
