How to Make Pure Coconut Oil without Preservatives and Chemicals

Today, many stores are flooded with poorly processed coconut oil. Take charge, make your own coconut oil today. All you need is brown or mature organic coconuts, cleaver or hammer, few bowls,a sturdy knife, grating equipment, coconut scraper, blender, strainer, spoons and containers to put your coconut oil in.

I will teach you 2 methods you can use in making coconut oil namely: Cold Process Method and Boiling Method

Cold Process Method

Step #1: Get brown/ mature coconuts

Buy fresh brown/ mature coconuts at the grocery store and find out if their coconuts are organic. Inspect them carefully. The best coconuts are brown, heavy, and don’t have mold on them. When you shake them, you should hear liquid sloshing around. These are great coconuts that will have a higher yield.

Step #2: Open the coconuts

To open a coconut, place a bowl under it to collect the water or do it over a sink. Hold the coconut in one hand. Use the hammer or back of the cleaver to sharply tap the center of the coconut against the grain. Rotate and repeat until the coconut shell breaks.

I recommend emptying the bowl before opening the next coconut in case it is bad. Bad coconuts smell rancid and their meat can be slimy, runny, and gross. Discard them! Good coconuts do not smell and their meat are hard and white.

Step #3: Remove the coconut meat

To remove the coconut meat, you will still need the cleaver or hammer and a sturdy knife. Use the back of the cleaver or hammer to gently tap the shell of the coconut. Sometimes, the coconut shell will pop right out. If it doesn’t then insert the sturdy knife between the meat and shell and twist it slightly. The coconut shells can be a little unstable so be very careful when tapping and using the knife.

Step #4: Grate/ shred the coconut meat

With the coconut scrapers, you can shred the coconut meat directly from the coconut shell. Be sure to place a bowl under the scrapers to collect all the gratings. If you don’t have a scraper, you can simply use the rough side of your grater to shred the extracted coconut meat.

You can save time and your fingers by using a blender or a food processor. But you will need to cut the meat into small pieces to make it easier for your appliances. You may also have to add water to ensure the coconut meat blends properly. Although, by adding water, you will end up with a slurry-like consistency.

Step #5: Extract the coconut milk

Use a strainer, cheese cloth, or a juicer to extract coconut milk from the meat.If you are using a juicer you don’t have to add a lot of water. Just simply load the chute with the grated coconut meat and switch on the appliance. The milk pours right out and the coconut meat left is really, really dry.

If you don’t have a juicer, all you need to do is add a little water to the grated coconut and squeeze the coconut meat. You’ll start seeing the water turning white. That’s your coconut milk. And the more you squeeze the meat, the more milk you’ll get out. You can also work the slurry from your blender in the same way.

Step #6: Strain the coconut milk

You need a strainer, or cheesecloth or any cloth for this step. The coconut milk and meat from your juicer, blender or gratings must be properly strained to remove any particles from the coconut milk. You can double strain and triple strain if necessary. And make sure you squeeze out as much milk as possible from the meat.

Step #7: Leave the coconut milk to sit overnight

Place the coconut oil in a jar and store in a warm place. Wait 24 hours for the coconut cream to settle at the bottom of the jar. The pure coconut oil will rise to the top.

Step #8: Scoop out cold-pressed, virgin coconut oil

Once the oil has separated from the cream and solidified, use a spoon to gently remove the solid, white layer. This is your 100% pure coconut oil cold-pressed.

Boiling  Method

Step #1: Grate the meat of coconut

Get your desired number of fully developed brown coconut and grate the meat of coconuts. Open the coconut, scoop out the meat and grate it into a bowl.

Step #2: Heat Water

Put your desired quatity of water in a saucepan and put it on a burner, allow to boil until it starts steaming (Let say 2 cups of water for 1 fully developed brown coconut).

Step #3: Blend the coconut using the hot water

Pour the grated coconut in a blender. Pour moderate quantity of hot water over the coconut and close the lid of the blender then blend till the coconut texture is smooth.

Step #4: Strain the coconut liquid

Use a strainer or place a cheesecloth over a bowl.  Pour the blended coconut over the cloth or strainer so that the coconut milk drips into the bowl. Use a spatula to push the pulp and squeeze out as much liquid as possible.

Step #5: Boil the coconut liquid

Pour the strain coconut liquid into a pot then place it on a burner, and turn the heat to medium high. stir continuously until the water has evaporated and the cream has separated from the oil and turned brown. While the oil is still hot, carefully strain it to separate the oil from the cream and you have your 100% pure coconut oil.
