How to overcome depression and sadness

Depressing is the feelings of severe despondency and dejection , sadness, unhappiness, sorrow etc . Depression is a pervasive feeling.

Over the years, studies has shown that having all you need in life does not stop depression. Even some rich people still battle with depression and that is why some rich and comfortable people in the society commit suicide.

During depression, hope disappears and the things you used to find enjoyable become a chore. Even winning a contract or getting a dream job would not snap someone out of depression and it is never a good idea to tell someone who is depressed to sort themselves out and pull themselves together.

In this article, I have carefully selected few things you can do to overcome depression which are listed below.

Exercise

Regular Exercise temporarily boosts feel-good chemicals called endorphins which improve natural immunity and improve mood and  other health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure, protecting against heart disease, cancer and boosting self-esteem.It may also have long-term benefits for people with depression . Regular exercise seems to encourage the brain to rewire itself in positive ways, according to Cook.

Sleep

Depression can make it hard to get enough sleep , and too little sleep can make depression worse.Sleep and mood are closely connected. Inadequate sleep can cause irritability and stress, while healthy sleep can enhance well-being.No other activity delivers so many benefits with so little effort so aim for between 7 and 9 hours sleep per night.

Eat healthy foods

There is no magic diet that fixes depression but eating healthy foods can help. It's paramount to watch what you eat, if depression tends to make you overeat, getting in control of your eating will help you feel better. Research has shown that depressed people often lack a fatty acid known as EPA. foods with omega-3 fatty acids and folic acid such as salmon, tuna, spinach, avocados and walnuts helps a lot in reducing depression.

Reach out and stay connected

This can be one of the hardest things to do when feeling depressed but it is one of the most rewarding activities. Force yourself to go out , hang out with family and friends. You have to work at having fun. Plan things you used to enjoy, even if they feel like a chore. Keep going to the movies.

Challenge negative thinking

You have to over ride negative thinking with a positive thinking, it helps a lot to get rig of depression. When ever you feel depressed, think of things that has made you happy in the past be it music, movies or event. You might feel like no one likes you, but is there real evidence for that? You might feel like the most worthless person on the planet, but is that really likely? It takes practice, but in time you can beat back those negative thoughts before they get out of control.

Depression put negativity on everything you do, including the way you see yourself, people or things around you and your future expectations. When you really examine those negative thoughts, you will discover they are actually true. You can’t break out of this pessimistic mind frame by telling yourself to “just think positive.”  You need to first identify the type of negative thoughts that are fueling your depression, and replace them with a more balanced way of thinking.

Forgive others and forget

Grudge is resentment resulting from a past insult or injury. It will only makes you feel bitter or annoyed about a past event making you loss focus on present and future.

When you hold a grudge, you are the ones that feel the anger. The person whom you are angry with is probably merrily going about his/her business completely oblivious to your feelings.

They may have caused you grief in the past, try not to allow that grief to continue – it only affects you, not them. Find a way to forgive and move on– they are not worthy of your time. Lighten the emotional load and you will improve your mood and help you to overcome depression.

Seek professional help

Consult a medical doctor, counselor or psychologist for supplements and help and Cognitive therapy can be extremely useful. You can also join a support group for depression or look for support from people who makes you feel safe and cared for.

The counselor helps you to understand your current thought patterns and identify any harmful or false ideas and thoughts that you have that can trigger depression or make it worse. The aim is to change your ways of thinking to avoid these ideas as well as help your thought patterns to be more realistic and helpful.

Being with others dealing with depression can go a long way in reducing your sense of isolation. You can also encourage each other, give and receive advice on how to cope, and share your experiences.
